Bolitho - the Christian School

From the Bolitho School website:

"The School is a Charitable Christian Foundation with a Church of England chaplain. It is still affiliated to – though independent of – the Woodard Corporation, the largest group of Church of England private schools in the country."

It is probable that GEMS Education will take over Bolitho. The Founder of GEMS is Sunny Varkey (pictured left.)

"Parents at a private school are being asked to sign contracts which would see their child expelled if the head considers the parents' behaviour to "bring the school into disrepute", it emerged today.

Letters were sent to parents by Sheila Kaye, the headteacher of Bury Lawn school in Milton Keynes, which is part of a chain of schools owned by the Global Education Management Systems (Gems). The letters, dated August 31, informed parents that they would have to agree to new terms and conditions for the January term.

Clause 6b of the terms and conditions reads: "The principal may at his or her discretion require you to remove or may exclude for a fixed period of time or permanently exclude your child if your behaviour is, in the opinion of the principal, unreasonable and is likely to bring the school into disrepute or affects, or is likely to affect adversely, others."

The document also promises not to use corporal punishment, despite the fact that corporal punishment was outlawed in independent schools in 1999."

"Gems, owned by Dubai-based businessman Sunny Varkey, took over Bury Lawn, the leading private school in Milton Keynes, two years ago. But last month parents, provoked by the sudden departure of a senior member of staff, passed a vote of no confidence in Gems' management and formed a protest group, Bury Lawn Change Group.

Gems plans to own and manage 200 day schools. Mr Varkey, the Indian-born chairman, claims to provide a service like an airline, from "no frills" through to "business class." Fees can range from £6,000 to £10,000 a year.

At Bury Lawn, 250 people demanded a say in the running of the school and declared that Gems had "proved wholly inadequate at obtaining any degree of trust in their abilities to run Bury Lawn.....The headteacher, Dave McCluskey, and the governors are opposed to the academy. They have misgivings about Gems' management and also cite the Commons education committee's concern that the academies' programme has not been fully trialled and tested."
