From the Financial Times

"According to Sunny Varkey, the founder of Gems, 38 per cent of families would purchase private education if an affordable, good quality option was available - a potential market of 1.7m students. He foresees the market developing into three sections for non-boarding private schools: mid-market schools with annual fees of £5,000-£6,000, "mid-market plus" schools at £6,000-£7,000 and "premium" at £8,000-£10,000."

"A Dubai-based millionaire who promised to bring cut-price private education to the UK has sold one of his schools after the upkeep of the grade-1 listed building proved too expensive.

Global Education Management Systems said yesterday that Kingswood College in Lancashire will close at the end of the summer term this year.It said that the cost of the upkeep of Scarisbrick Hall, near Ormskirk, could "not be reconciled with the cost of repair and maintenance".

The closure underlines how tough the private education market is despite the optimism of Sunny Varkey, the entrepreneur behind Gems, when he came to the UK promising to make it more affordable for middle-class parents."

"This is a dynamic and vibrant community which upholds the values of a traditional education whilst, at the same time, engaging in innovation appropriate to education at the start of the 21st Century.

Our purpose is to provide an outstanding education for children, supporting them in their passage to adulthood by developing character and intellect within a small community in which each individual is cared for and valued equally.

Such a stimulating and supportive atmosphere enriches children in all aspects of their academic and personal development in such a way as to prepare them to face a future of change and challenge.

I believe that education should be an exciting, uplifting and liberating experience, a process that unlocks a world of opportunity. It must give pupils a lifelong appetite for knowledge and understanding, a curiosity about the world and a delight in it."
